Tour of the 50 US states
• US 50 States Tour
Almost from the first day of my arrival in the United States I had a dream about the great journey across the country. Since then I have traveled the length and breadth of the West, and the last four years he lived in Hawaii. But the rest of America and remained a stranger to me. While it was not decided last spring to begin preparing for a trip to the magnificent remaining forty-four states and visit all the places of interest, towns, parks and reserves of the country. Starting from May 15, 2015, my long-cherished dream is becoming a reality.
Below, we briefly describe the states where we've been, and separate post will talk about Berning Mene.
The first place was beautiful National Park Red Forest on the border of California and Oregon.
go to the south. The famous first road it is especially beautiful here such places - where rivers flow into the ocean.
Prior to our trip we stayed in Hawaii for four years, it would be foolish freezing at 18-degree heat. Tired of these cold in San Francisco, we went further south. In this city we will return in the fall. We stopped in a weak City - the former base of the United States Marine Corps during the Second World War. Now here come the winter, "winter birds" - the inhabitants of the northern states, mostly pensioners, the poor, the hippies and other similar public. 150 people live here permanently. Campus is a decoration to any postapokalipsichesky film.
Alla enjoys the view from the place of another overnight stay in the Sonoran Desert in the south-east of California.
Northern Algodonskie dunes cover about 320 square kilometers - is the biggest sandbox in North America.
to call in Arizona. In our ranking of the best on the heterogeneity and diversity of all staff, in which we have already visited. There is the Grand Canyon, and it is beautiful. Its size, its age, its quietness. And unusually, did not have anywhere to climb, then to look at the views. Just out of the car and you are as if on top of a two-kilometer mountain.
Even further north, near the town of Page, we again go over the steppe. On clay, rammed between the rocks. And again, in front of the pit. This Horseshoe - bend of the Colorado River near the town of Page. Depth - Three hundred meters. Where you can sit for a long time and not even think about nothing. Experience with sensations completely occupy the brain and need time to digest what he saw.
Not far from the town of Page, Colorado River Lake Powell. A town built on a lake and park, where you can rent any floating means of the motorcycle to the big house on the water, and swim in its numerous branches, narrow and wide, where there are nooks for fishing and beaches to relax on the beach. Along the river and are equipped with parking, places for refueling and draining waste, restaurants, campgrounds, and many more just. One of a kind, unique place.
There's one small, but no less famous canyon that we want to visit - Antelope Canyon. It is located on Indian reserves, where access can only be a guide to us, and only four-wheel drive tracks. It is wet and quiet, only slightly rustling crumbling sand. In the corners of dark shadows before his eyes brown walls, and above - magic.
We are moving to the north. In Utah there are a lot of good and interesting, especially in the south of the state. But this part, we reserve the autumn. In the meantime, we get to Salt Lake City, the Mormon capital.
Even leaving the state saw in the rock some gnats. I had to fly up close.
Idaho is famous for its mountain ranges and rivers, caves and faults, and volcanic arc Challis, which stretches here from the south-west of Canada.
Another Idaho is famous for its hot springs. There was once a lot of volcanoes, so underground hot water is provided by the state. We have already been to the "fever", but normal, civilized, well equipped with swimming pools and so on. D. Now we go to a real, wild source "Golden Beetle", and for this we have to climb the mountains.
The first part of our journey is over. In a small town in the southeast of the State of Washington, we rest and regroup. Month on the road to something we learned, especially about unnecessary things. Serviced car wash, otmylis, get enough sleep and, of course, otelis. Then, they are mothers. Around Walla Walla beauty and a lot of different tracks, through which you can get closer to this beauty closely.
The second week of our holiday is held in the state of Montana, in the town of Whitefish, that is, White fish. In the north-east along the Deuce is Glacier National Park, Glacier National Park. Mandatory program.
Fishing on Lake Flathead Lake (flat head).
After a rest, take a walk in Montana we go into the second part of our expedition, which intend to get to Chicago, to come down to New York, then in Maine stop in Canada and then return back to Washington.
Is selected in those same American prairie, about which we read in childhood Mayne Reid. Quiet, smell the grass, earth, and sometimes manure.
I stop in North Dakota. In the Mandan village, we came especially to go to a rodeo, and then together with cowboys celebrate the birthday of the country - Independence Day. Rodeo impressed the most positive way.
One of the greatest rivers in the world, the fourth longest and the ninth affluent. It flows through ten states, and empties into the Gulf of Mexico, stretching to 3000, 770 kilometers. But in appearance and not say. Meet Mississippi childhood. Minnesota.
Getting to Minneapolis. Until now, one of the most important architectural structures in the majority of small and large cities in the US are Catholic churches, Lutheran and other religious organizations.
I have lived in the States for nearly 19 years (although the sensations - 10 years). If I previously asked a question: "Do you like America", I would without hesitation replied: "Very much!" And the next question: "And what exactly do you like America", I would reply that it's safe and clean, is a high level of everyday life, where you can get a good education, build a career, buy a car / house / boat, to provide old age and the list goes on. That is, I would list everything about me and my interests. Even easier: America I liked the fact that here I personally can be convenient and comfortable. Today is my answer to the question, what I like the country, is somewhat different. And for someone, perhaps strange. But now America (the country, not the state) I like especially the fact that it is real. Unfeigned, not fictitious, but simple-minded and straight. It is almost completely missing a show and hypocrisy. And even in this "almost" is real - that is, a little, but falsehood is still there :)
Next shot - this is an illustration of what I mean. Here is the new Cadillac and rusty monstrischa, the correct way, and scribbled graffiti old cars, these no matter what do not pretend, but neat houses, and this huge, powerful prop-Trumpets with disproportionately small sign chaotic thicket of bushes and carefully arranged set of digits - that in the whole of America. Which it is, with all its advantages and disadvantages, with the development and underdevelopment.
In the US, there is almost everything you could ever be in the world. Climate and geography, nation and culture, technology and archaic, smart and stupid, brilliant city and provincial village, famous geniuses and stoned Gopnik, decent women and wanton women, capitalism and communism, atheism and the most primitive toteizm, Amish and drug lords, brilliant career and broken lives. Great and insignificant, happy and unhappy.
That's what I like America. The fact that it has taken all that capable people, both good and bad, and thus continues to evolve and grow. That it have something to criticize and to praise. With all its successes balanced by setbacks and disadvantages - advantages. What we had in this very similar, making it even clearer to me and closer. And yet it seems to me that only now, traveling to this country, I'm really starting to understand it. And take this for what it is, not what it could be in my mind and in my expectations. Why all the lyrics? And the fact that we are getting closer to the northeast of the country, so it is best to prepare for the worst :)
We visit in Wisconsin. That little rivulet from Minnesota to Wisconsin acquired the status of the Grand River, in whose honor and named the 35th road. In parallel, the railway.
A rare case of Monroe town center is built on an ancient European tradition around the town hall.
In Wisconsin except corn and potatoes is grown many cranberry and ginseng. But the most important thing in Wisconsin - a milk and cheese. State known as "America's dairy farm," and even said that viskonsinovskoe milk very tasty.
The largest state city - Milwaukee. He is world famous for the fact that it is based the headquarters of the most famous motorcycle company - Harley-Davidson.
In Illinois, we were interested in only one city - Chicago. Today it is the most photogenic of all the American Center, where we had to go.
After strolling in the center, we go to the bordering areas. Break through the fire hydrant surrounded the car looks aggressive young slackers and Homi in blue shorts, just hopped on the hood to us. This Englewood - is one of the most troubled and dangerous areas in Chicago.
From Chicago we go to Detroit, which is known worldwide for its abandoned and dangerous areas. In the fifties and sixties the city magnificently blossomed and developed in all directions, mainly in the automotive industry. And then somewhere something went wrong, and Detroit began to fade.
Today it again carefully restored and brought back to life, but traces of the economic catastrophe will long remind of what the consequences may lead mindedness, greed and thirst for short-term gain. Downtown, contrary to expectations, was quite ordinary, nothing particularly remarkable down-Town. Yes, there are still empty some buildings and some of the parks seem a little neglected. But we encounter a greater or lesser degree in every city we visit.
Our visit to Indiana began with night knock on the car window:
- You Th doing here?
- And we, sir, in my country, and now sleep.
- A strange place you choose - simply at the roadside. Vaughn is next to parking for trucks.
- noisy out there, and we have open windows.
- OK, good night.
- Do you mind if we sfotkatsya your car?
- No problem, just my flashlight all you shine, I guess.
The capital of Indiana - Indianapolis. We like the name is easy to remember (we started to learn the capitals of all the states). Streets Indy Center, affectionate diminutive of Indianapolis, converge to the "Soldiers Monument".
Departing from powerful thunderstorms are moving further east, in Ohio.
In the Capitol of Ohio collecting school choir gave a concert.
In Ohio, it turns out, lives the largest group of Amish - about 55, 000. We decided to at least look at the part of their way of life. Throughout the county warning signs on the carts. Precaution is not superfluous: the hilly neighborhood, and no curb on all roads.
Amish Cemetery is no different from the cemeteries "British".
When we leave the road and go deep into the fields, children's reactions to our car was similar to the reaction of African aborigines on white people. Only then we realized that in view of the life and transport facilities for these children, most likely, never in his life had not been on the church and the village shop and see the machine only when the same as tourists we want to get in their wilderness.
After talking with the Amish of Ohio, we continued to move eastward. The first toll road, the longest of all that we had to go. 300 miles (480 km) from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia cost us $ 34. The main reason for "serviceability" of the road - it's tunnels. At first I did not quite understand why so many of them here, until I remembered that we are moving to the northern Appalachians, very similar to the Carpathian region.
We arrived in Philadelphia. In principle, such a turd would be a symbol of cleanliness of the city. In fact it kapnuvshaya with a giant paint brush, but it's message remains the same.
In the evening, walking in the center, we heard the cries of the crowd. It turned out, the movement of athletes ... They gather here every Sunday and loud cries are lit each other and others in the class. Pootzhimavshis, poprisedav and jump on the spot, the crowd ran down the city. Good advertising of sport and a healthy lifestyle.
Top Philly looks good. The water in the distance - a Delaware River, which separates Pennsylvania from New Jersey. Where we are heading the same evening.
More specifically, in a famous city with beautiful name Atlantic City. The first reaction in Atlantic City, "Oh, can not be. Now otedem away and start a normal city. " City have not begun. But began contrasts, such as here: staryuchy house with trash around on the background of the huge building casinos and hotels. And the city of sin ... Well, firstly, not the city, and so town. Regarding the sin, that here, too, all is not well - especially sin no place, because many hot spots have gone bankrupt and closed. In general, we did not like Atlantic City, so we will not pay attention to it.
from the failed city of sin, we headed to the main city of the United States - New York. We spent just a couple of days, so it was very hot and we decided to come back here in the fall. Entrance to the subway in Brooklyn.
In the capital of the State of New York, Albany, was surprisingly a lot of iron and concrete wastelands on Capitol Hill, where are all the administrative buildings. In the distance, seeing some castle, it has nothing to do with the surrounding Khrushchev betoninoy. We must look, can a museum.
It turns out that this is not a museum and castle, but a real State Capitol. At the entrance and frame protection. - We just want to look.
- pofotkat, or what?
- And here is what to take a picture?
- Go and see for yourself.
"Stairs in a million."
Later, we learned that here actually lead tours. But we wandered by themselves, without any restrictions. Now we know that at least sometimes, but in the Capitol should go and see.
By the time we finally decide to stop in Halifax. So it will pass the following three state poshustree need. From New York we visit in Vermont. This so-called New England, hence began the history of the country. Landscapes correspond to the name.
Going further, in New Hampshire. state motto is Live Free or Die. These states are so small that they can be crossed in less than three hours. Covered Bridges - the card of the New England.
Maine - the easternmost state in the US. Here there is a subtle northern nature. Portland liked. This old fishing town, in its own style and its own coastal charm.
Ruslan "Halifax head slammed": he wanted to visit in Nova Scotia - nothing at all extra 900 miles or 1470 kilometers. The edge of the North American light: the Atlantic coast, the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Two days going from Nova Scotia to Quebec.
Most of the road runs through the forest - to go dull.
But sometimes it is nice.
Montreal Chicago tried to move from the first place in our ranking of North American cities. Agreed on the fact that there is just another weight category of "old city", in which he - the undisputed leader.
In Montreal, the lively streets. That is, there are a lot of people do not because they are sent somewhere - from work to home, in a restaurant in the club - but because they came out into the city just to be in it. For them, pacing on the sidewalk and has a purpose. Hence, a nice, cozy atmosphere.
Following the call in Montreal in Toronto. Living City, a real one. Similarly, we can still come here, and more than once.
The next destination - the town with the speaker called the Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls to watch only need on the part of Canada. It is desirable with a special observation tower. The exceptional entertainment place.
From Canada we rush to Washington as a couple of weeks, we're going to Berning Men in Nevada. We visit in Iowa. There we visited the wonderful places that I want to be proud of. It - pedestrian and bicycle bridge. Only that he now is. And once it was a railroad. After the train bridge does not require a large, state government first wanted him to just carry, because it is in a secluded spot just a few kilometers from the city. But there were people who offered the best option: to remake it so that he continued to serve the people. Tracks leading to it from both sides to replace the track on which they shall walk, run and ride bikes lovers outdoor activities.
Ninety-sixth day of the trip started on the hood of the Ford in Karhendzhe, Nebraska. Carhendge - Karhendzh, auto copy of the English Stonehenge.
Next on our way state - South Dakota. The town of Pine Ridge, located on the territory of the Indian reservation greets us with a terrible picture. Cold, windy, wet, drizzling rain. The walls of the church waiting for something-alcoholics Indians. And can not wait.
We reach the Badlands National Park, located in the southwest of the state of South Dakota, where the prairie turned into a strange mass of loose sand of the earth's most outlandish forms. In appearance Bad Earth is not so bad.
And finally we visit Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. We spend the night at the camp and in the morning we go to look at the geysers and hot springs are the most generous in this sense of the park. It is huge, nearly 9, 000 square kilometers. Geysers and springs are located in clusters of a few pools that are, on average, at a distance of half an hour away from one another. Snow, ice, crunches, frost, winter - say the eye. Boiling water, jersey, summer, you che - meets the skin. Brain Freeze silence.
The second part of the trip ends here. Hence we direct route to Walla Walla to regroup and from there - to the festival Berning Maine, on a trip on which we will cover in a separate post.
