The company without a soul
• The company without a soul
In 1994, I first installed the operating system Microsoft Windows 3.11 ... with a stack of three-inch floppy disks on your first home computer 386 DX-40C 4 MB of RAM and hard drive with 40 MB. Until then, I only practiced with DOS 6.22 and a five-inch diskettes in the 286th dad at work. Windows 3.11 - it was the first beautiful and comfortable operating system, I remember all future versions of the system, I put bets to feel before, how far stepped progress. And what about this "troika" with 4 MB of RAM wildly slowed down Windows 95, but how do you want it to look!
Equipment for me - it's not just a tool, I like to understand the details and the details, read reviews and analysis. I spent too many sleepless nights with Windows, in the struggle with the "blue screen", with endless bugs and manual settings and graphics card drivers sound blaster to start favorite NFS in the late 90s. And only by going to the Mac, I realized that computer, from design to the operating system, designed for both work and pleasure without a headache.
Any large public corporation usually has a Visitor Center and Museum of History, where fans can see and touch something that has gone into the distant past. Typically, these centers - tourist highlight areas, the examples do not need to go far: the Museum of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, BMW museum in Munich or the Guinness Museum in Dublin. Such a center, I expect to see in Redmond, Washington, is here, 30 km from Seattle, is the headquarters of Microsoft. But what I ozhdalo disappointment when here I met a new advertising gadget flops and baby bibs as souvenirs ...
In Seattle, Microsoft works for me old friend, but in the week, when I came, he was on a business trip in Europe and I never went to visit the office. Office buildings there are many, it is not of skyscrapers, and 3-6-storey buildings, buried in greenery and parks:
Microsoft-bus and taxis:
Cool pedestrian crossing sign:
Vizitor center is located in one of the office buildings on the ground floor:
The entrance is free, but the exposure is very small.
And the most insulting, that the stories given to only 10 meters of the exposition in the corner. A few examples of ancient art and no hint at the history of the company's products:
This is a screenshot of 3.11 ... As it was cool at the time! Here, in vizitor center, a word about it :(
All the rest ... Skype, Surface, X-Boh, and even some kind of nonsense:
I read somewhere that Microsoft Surface losses on sales approaching $ 1 billion.
On the other side of the corridor there is a shop, I bought a huge cup for 3 $ c Windows logo :)
But of interesting - it's a great album, which is composed of travelers' photos of Microsoft employees:
Even was a little sad that a company with such a rich modern history, which affects more than one generation, has an interesting museum in Redmond. The company without a soul and ideological values, "just business, nothing personal."
