Archaeologists have found 2300-year-old shield of the bark of a tree - he is better than metal sheets?

A couple of thousand years ago, humanity mastered metallurgy and people have learned to create a truly deadly swords and spears of metal. From this we can imagine what was the surprise of archaeologists from the University of York, where in 2015 they found the shield of those times, made of light, and pretty thin bark. Products from organic materials break down quickly, but due to the high humidity, the ancient remedy has survived more than 2,300 years. The reconstruction showed that it could really be protected from impact of swords and spears.

The find was called shield Enderby - according to the researchers, it was made from the bark of alder, willow, poplar, or hickory. Radiocarbon analysis showed that it was made between 395 and 255 years BC. With a width of 37 centimeters, the shield length was 67 cm. To strengthen the construction of thin strips of wood and frame, framing the entire shape of the protective guns were used. For making beats meant the inner side of the cortex, and the rough outer surface of the shield was aimed at the holder.

The researchers have found a product from the bark of the tree of the time, but because of her boxes and other items were made, but not defensive devices. New discovery led historians take a fresh look at the methods and the manufacture of weapons of people who lived thousands of years ago.

This is truly an amazing artifact gave us a glimpse of prehistoric technologies, which we will never guess - shared an archaeologist at York University Michael Bamforth.

The analysis showed that the shield was well decorated - it was red, and was portrayed checkerboard pattern. Before the loss of the unknown soldier, it was badly damaged spearheads. The researchers also noted that the panel had "shaped waist", and could inspire people to create metal panels of the same shape.

Initially, researchers thought that such a shield could not adequately protect soldiers from impacts, but after its reconstruction, they found an interesting feature of the shield. It turned out that being lightweight, it protects against shock, and provided the soldier greater freedom of movement. This is considered the main advantage of the shield of bark over metal counterparts.

Only as a result of experiments, we realized that it can be tough enough to protect against knocks metal weapons. Shield from the bark is not as durable as wood or metal, but it is much easier, and provides much more freedom of movement, - explained Bamforth.

Archaeologists find and larger fortifications. For example, recently they have unearthed an ancient Egyptian fortress that was destroyed during the Persian invasion. Details of the discovery can be read in our material.
