The researchers took as a basis for design of the skin of several different types of squid, octopus and cuttlefish, which uses an adaptive, dynamic skin for the existence of water. The unique ability of the cephalopod masquerade rapidly changing color is partly due to the skin cells called chromatophores that can change its shape instantly.

"We used a similar concept in its design, creating a layer of material in tiny metal" islands "that are adjacent to each other. In a relaxed state "islands" are merged together, and the material reflects and traps heat. The developers believe that their material will be able to find its application not only in the production of heat management blankets. For example, it can be used for the production of reflective inserts in buildings to create an insulating layer adapted to different environmental conditions; for the manufacture of tents that would be extremely good for the comfort the inhabitants in the open air; material may also be used to effectively control the temperature of electronic components. "Everyone fits their own room temperature. One can be comfortable at 18 degrees Celsius, the other feels good only at 25 degrees. As for the runners of the same, then they can develop a new generation of heat management blankets, equipped with special touch screen, allows you to customize your comfort temperature.
