Scientists have figured out what it consists of and what the green icebergs
Most icebergs are painted in white or blue color, but in the beginning of the XX century, sailors discovered another kind of ice blocks - they have a green tint. Their unusual appearance has long puzzled scientists because they could not find him worthy of an explanation. After many years the answer seems to have finally found - researchers from the University of Washington announced that the icebergs are colored green due to the abundance of iron oxide.
These oxides are taken from the bedrock Antarctica - stones are crushed into powder under the action of friction and glacial washed in cold sea water flows, then these small particles become a component of green icebergs. In addition, in their composition also includes dissolved marine plants and animals, which have long been floating in the water.
Iron is an important food aquatic life such as phytoplankton, but it is absent in many parts of the ocean. It is possible green icebergs are the only source of iron for some sea creatures, so the researchers compared them with the "waiters", which deliver hungry organisms nutritious food.
It looks like a parcel delivery to the post office. Iceberg can deliver iron is far corners of the ocean, melted, and phytoplankton provide decent food.

As a rule, green icebergs are relatively small. The area of white lumps of ice are sometimes affects - e.g., NASA recently discovered lump area 1, 7 thousands of square kilometers. Its size can be compared with London, or even a small African country.
