Volvo Autonomous transport consumes 80% less energy than conventional buses
The Swedish company Volvo is making great advances in the field of autonomous vehicles. Its trucks with the autopilot already proven to be effective, and at the end of 2019 they will be used in Norway for limestone transportation. The company wants to improve the reliability of their autonomous buses to the same level, and began to experience them on a special testing ground Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Transport shows its best, and it is promoted by its interesting features.
Polygon Institute consists of marked roads, signs, pedestrians moving models and stations for quick battery charging. The test bus 7900 Volvo recognizes them with sensors, cameras and satellite system that determines its location to within a centimeter. Also, the bus has a special unit that monitors the angle of it. The data collected by this whole electronics uses artificial intelligence to build routes, stop when a pedestrian and alignment movement on rough roads.
The bus interior fit 80 passengers and, interestingly, it consumes 80% less energy than the same vehicle with a diesel engine. To charge the battery will be used by the station 300 kW, reminiscent of lampposts. They are installed directly at the roads throughout the territory of the test site, and provide fast charging with minimal downtime.
It is expected that testing will prove buses suitable for driving on busy roads. In addition to Volvo, the development of unmanned public transport and other companies involved. For example, in the middle of 2018 Baidu released the first batch of unmanned buses.
