Today, we have become accustomed to the fact that our mobile devices are voice assistant with voice recognition, and many of the applications on smartphones have this feature. However, few people thought that this possibility is quite a heavy load on the processor device, consuming using about 1 watt of power. Such high power consumption does not allow to build in function in an extremely small-sized device, but that could change thanks to a new dedicated chip developed by scientists and engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Their development, depending on the speech rate, consumed from 0.2 to 10 milliwatts of power, which is 100 times less than the current performance.
The use of a new type of chip will make it possible to save up to 90% of battery power when using voice control. This form is ideal when using "smart" clock and other wearable electronics, for "normal" control scheme on small devices difficult. When creating a new chip experts Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the development are faced with a serious problem. The fact that the voice recognition is used data, the volume of which far exceeds the capacity of the internal memory of the chip, and if the "connect" external memory - increasing device power consumption.
The problem was solved by using special data compression algorithms and optimization of the structure of the chip, which made it possible to minimize the number of accesses to the external storage system. A sample device was demonstrated at the International Conference on solid state circuits (International Solid-State Circuits Conference).
