Food for astronauts will be packaged in an edible film
Samara State Technical University has developed a new type of edible food film for astronauts. She, in contrast to the analogues on the market, is composed entirely of natural ingredients, mostly from fruit puree, eucalyptus and sage.
The development of an edible film employees SamGTU took 2, 5 years. "Device" film sufficiently uncomplicated: from fruit puree formed mass with a plasticizer (component giving plasticity), and then the resulting structure is dried at a temperature of about sixty degrees. After this treatment, the film can be used immediately or collapse into original rolls. In the resulting packaging material can be stored as a food and to warm them, and then eat the package with food. Moreover, thanks to the antibacterial properties of the film is capable of slowing the process of decay product and mold. It is also worth mentioning that such a package can significantly reduce the amount of trash that is disposed of on a daily basis with the ISS. In fact, this edible film has been used for space flight back in the 60s, but it was then used with a slightly different purpose: it was necessary to somehow solve the problem of flying in weightlessness crumbs. But after the change of food manufacturing technology, the need for such a film disappeared. Now, like the invention may fundamentally change the system of catering in orbit.
